Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a common cause of death and can be a major cause of organ damage. This study aimed to determine whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) provides neuroprotection after transient ischemia. Cathodal tDCS with stimulation of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.8 mA was applied to Mongolian gerbils with transient ischemia induced. After 5 days, Cresyl violet (C-V) and Fluoro-Jade C (F-J C) staining of the brain tissues were conducted to confirm the neuroprotective effect in the hippocampal CA1 region. Our results demonstrated that neuronal protective effect in all experimental groups with cathodal tDCS application. Notably, stimulation with cathodal tDCS of 0.1 mA showed the highest neuronal protective effect. Our results suggest that cathodal tDCS application can protect neurons from damage caused by transient ischemia.
